How to identify it
Also called black beetle. Work down these in order — the first one is usually enough on its own.
- No markings at all — uniformly dark, which is itself the identifier
- Males have wings covering about three-quarters of the abdomen; females have only small wing pads
- Neither sex flies, and they move noticeably more slowly than other roaches
What it gets mistaken for
Most people arrive at a pest name by ruling things out. These are the ones that genuinely look similar, and the detail that separates them.
Where you will find it
- Crawlspaces, basements and under porches
- Around leaking outdoor taps, water meters and drains
- Damp mulch, leaf litter and beneath stacked materials
- Ground-floor rooms with a moisture problem
Signs it is already there
You will nearly always see the evidence before you see the pest itself.
- Dark roaches at floor level, often moving slowly in the open
- A distinctly musty smell in a crawlspace or basement
- Sightings concentrated at the lowest, dampest part of the structure
Moderate. Worth dealing with, but not an emergency.
Why it is harder to deal with than it looks
They are a symptom. Treating the roaches without fixing the damp simply resets the clock, because the conditions that supported them are unchanged.
What actually works
Find the moisture — a dripping tap, poor drainage against the foundation, a crawlspace that never dries, a downspout discharging at the wall. Improve ventilation, clear leaf litter and mulch back, and seal the ground-level gaps they use.
