Most people arrive at a pest name by ruling things out. These are the ones that genuinely look similar, and the detail that separates them.
Where you will find it

- Under slabs, in mulch and beneath stones outdoors

You will nearly always see the evidence before you see the pest itself.
- Persistent trails that reappear within hours of cleaning
- Activity concentrated around water rather than food
- Sudden appearance of several trails at once after treatment

Why it is harder to deal with than it looks
This species buds. Spray a trail with a repellent product and the colony can split into several smaller colonies, often deeper into the structure. That is why so many people report the problem getting worse and spreading to more rooms after they treated it.
What actually works
Bait rather than spray, and leave it alone for a week or two while foragers carry it back. Critically, do not spray near bait — you kill the delivery mechanism. Alongside that, fix the moisture source and pull mulch and plantings back from the foundation.
